Apples to Apples | A Guest Post by DJ AJ9 of Something New Entertainment

Today's post comes from one of my FAVORITE people in the local wedding industry - Anna-Jeannine Herman, a.k.a DJ AJ9, of Something New Entertainment.  Why do I adore her, you ask?  Not only is she an incredible, sweet and funny lady to hang out with, she and her husband, Justin, are REALLY good at their jobs and take the time to educate their clients.  So feel lucky to be blessed with this great write-up about why it's always a good idea to hire a professional DJ :o)

With today’s economy, many couples are looking for ways to save money on their wedding.  You may be wondering to yourself “why spend hundreds of dollars to hire a professional company when my friend, a DJ from an online classified ad, or an MP3 player can do the same thing for less?”  But, remember: like choosing a photographer, dress designer, or cake artist, hiring a DJ is not always an “apples to apples” comparison.  While you might pay less for the services of an amateur entertainer, you may not be buying an equivalent product.  Differences in quality and style can make a very big difference.  The abilities of your DJ selection can determine how enjoyable your reception is for yourself and your guests -- whether your dance floor stays packed all night long or whether everyone leaves by 9:00 P.M.
While it is certainly true that, like higher-quality photographers, dress designers, and cake artists, a professional DJ company may not be your lowest bidder, here are a few good reasons to choose one anyway:
  • Experience: how much experience does the person operating the sound equipment have, not only with the equipment itself, but with public speaking, crowd control, and problem solving?  Even using professional-grade equipment, an amateur DJ may not have sufficient knowledge to effectively use all those knobs and buttons to their best advantage.  The resulting sound may not be much better than your boom box.  Something New DJ/MCs complete a rigorous apprentice program with a written curriculum emphasizing not only how to use the equipment effectively but how to evaluate acoustics, “read” the crowd to keep them dancing, speak with good diction, be tactful with guests, and anticipate the needs of the bridal party.
  • Peace of Mind and Good Memories: what do you want to remember most about your reception?  Worrying whether your caterer knows it’s time to pour the champagne or if your photographer knows it’s time to cut the cake?  Coordinating your reception instead of dancing?  Cheesy announcements?  Cueing and re-cueing the MP3 player?  Listening to songs you don’t particularly like or maybe have never heard?  Hiring a professional DJ company allows you to relax and actually enjoy the party you’ve spent so much time planning.  Something New even schedules planning with your actual DJ!
  • Reliability: what will happen if your friend or amateur DJ develops an illness, equipment failure, or transportation problem?  With a professional company, replacement equipment and additional staff should be readily available.  Something New DJs work in pairs and have backup equipment on-site.
  • Equipment: is the stereo setup able to produce high-quality sound sufficient to fill your reception hall but still sensitive enough to prevent the music from blaring or becoming distorted?  Do you need a microphone for toasts or other events?  A professional DJ company will utilize specialized equipment designed to fill a large hall without distortion and will have microphones available for speeches and announcements.  Something New also provides a wireless microphone for toasts.
  • Etiquette (Professionalism): how will your DJ dress?  Will your DJ adhere to your “must play” and “do not play” lists?  Will your DJ be set up early and ready when the guests arrive, or still be loading in at the beginning of dinner?  Something New DJs partner with you in planning, paying careful attention to your musical preferences.  We arrive early and dress appropriately for your event, according to your preferences, typically in tuxedos or other black-tie eveningwear.
  • Music Variety: will your DJ have access to all your favorites?  What about newer music?  Professional DJs often have access to new music before it is available for purchase to the general public.  Something New stays up-to-date on the latest music.  If you’ve heard it on the radio, chances are we have it in our library, and if we don’t, we’ll try to get it for you.
If you are very brave, you can watch this video courtesy of the American Disc Jockey Association entitled "iPod Wedding Disaster"... While not exactly a "disaster," I warn you -- it's not pretty.  The excitement -- or lack thereof -- starts about 1:50 in.  It points out -- "You have worked countless hours and spent thousands of dollars on decorations, food, beverages, flowers, etc.  But if your guests leave early, how will they ever enjoy your hard work?"

With 81%** of wedding guests surveyed in a national poll saying that the thing they remember most about a wedding is the entertainment, the quality and style of the entertainer you choose can very dramatically influence the enjoyability of your evening for both you and your guests.   Certainly something to think about when debating whether to splurge on chair covers or entertainment.

The Northeast Ohio Bride is incredibly fortunate to have so many excellent choices of reputable DJ companies to choose from -- through Akron, Canton, and Cleveland, there are are a number of high-quality professionals out there.  All you have to do is find the one that fits best for you and your fiance!  If you're ready to take your wedding "a step above the same old," contact Something New today!  Please give us a call at 330-253-2900.

Wedding Wednesday | "The Biggest Mistakes Brides Make with DJ's"

Your reception DJ - A Big Deal or Not?

I would like to think that the music played at your reception IS important. However, sometimes we get a little too carried away and forget to find out the facts about our DJ.

I ran into an article that is titled “The Biggest Mistakes Brides Make with DJ’s” on www.weddingvendors.com and they have some pretty good suggestions to consider.

1) Not taking first impressions into consideration.

2) Thinking that all DJ’s are the same - Every DJ has their own style, different skill level, different rates, and vary a lot in the “arsenal” which is their musical library - the heart of their versatility.

3) Hiring the cheapest DJ you can find.

4) Not communicating with your DJ - Keep your DJ informed of your plans, your special songs, any changes, your timeline, or anything else he may need to know. Don’t wait until the week or even a month before the big day to start communicating.

5) Not having a written contract.

6) Not making sure your DJ has liability insurance.

7) Taking complete control of the music selection from your DJ.

8) Not making sure the DJ you want is guaranteed to be your DJ - Any time you deal with a big company, make sure you get in writing that the DJ you want is the one that will show up.

9) Not going over back up plans with your DJ.

10) Not hiring a DJ quickly - Don’t go through all the work finding the DJ you want and then procrastinate on booking.

These 10 “common” mistakes may or may not pertain to you, but hopefully it helps the bride-to-be with making her DJ decision :)

Grammys : : Love it or Hate it?

Appearance....Appearance....
Appearance is one of the most talked about things when there is any award show. It was not at all different when it came to the Grammys that aired Sunday night on CBS.

Lady Gaga was on everyone's mind, wondering what extravagant outfit she would wear this year. We have seen a solar system and a meat dress before, so who knew what was next. She did anything but disappoint her fans by arriving in an egg and beginning her performance on stage the same way.
I personally hated Lady Gaga's outfit/appearance, but on the other hand, her outfits tend to creep me out all the time, so I may be a little biased.

Selena Gomez, who is also known as Alex Russo on Wizards of Wavely Place, came to the Grammys in a stunning long, form fitting dress. Selena may only be 18 but looked like a sophisticated adult.
I loved Selena's looked!!!

Rihanna's dress while performing with Eminem - my sister and I discussed that it looked like Vera Wang with an Edge, and we loved it!! Not everyone can pull of a dress like that, but thank you Rihanna for being that one person that can.
If you could not tell by now, I loved her dress!!!

Cee Lo Green was wearing WHAT?!?!? while performing his song "Forget You". Many people are already saying it was like a bad version of Big Bird on Sesame Street and I agree. However, as odd as it was, I loved it. I may not have loved the creepy puppets, but I loved that he did something creative and bold and had Gwyneth singing with him :-)
Different Cee Lo Green, yet loving it!!

I would love to hear what our fans have to say out there. Did you love it or hate it? Maybe you have personal favorite that you saw on TV, or even something you hated---Let Us Know :-)

Wedding Friday | 10 Wedding Blunders to Avoid

My original intention was to post this on Wednesday, but since that didn't happen I thought we'd have a Wedding Friday instead of a Wedding Wednesday ;o)

Since my sister is getting married I took the liberty of buying literally every worthwhile wedding magazine available at both Target and Borders. While flipping through The Knot Ohio, I found what is quite possibly the best list of "rules" to follow when planning your wedding. I absolutely had to share because a) these are things that every bride should know, but most likely won't be aware of since they're never planned a wedding and b) I reiterated several of them when speaking to my sister just the other day (she's already experienced almost half of the "issues" on the list and she's only been engaged six days)! So, read this, re-read this, share it with your friends and know that it will truly help you avoid stress while planning your big day!

10 Wedding Blunders to Avoid
From blowing your budget on your dress to hiring friends instead of pros, here's a heads up on 10 wedding headaches you can definitely do without.
Written By Meredith Bodgas, Original Article in The Knot Ohio

1. Try not to get attached to your flower choices.
When you book your florist a year before your wedding day, he can only guess which blooms will be available for your wedding. If you have to have, say, asters, you could be disappointed. Instead, choose backups to your main blooms and add them to your contract. Think in terms of colors and shapes instead of specific flowers.

2. Think twice before you send save-the-dates to everyone.
Until you mail out invitations, your guest list isn't final. And it shouldn't be: Friends you're close with when you get engaged may be mere acquaintances by the time you get hitched. Reserve save-the-dates only for those guests you know will be invited, like your families. {I couldn't agree with this more - alway, always, always only send save the dates (and any other pre-wedding announcements/invites) to those people that will always, no matter what, be on your guest list. Start with the bridal party and immediate family members, people that you would never think of not inviting.}

3. You will regret it if you skip videography.
Photos only take you so far: Videos let you hear your voice tremble as you say your vows and watch your friends tear up the dance floor. With more people documenting your wedding, you'll see things you may have missed on the day. {This is honestly something I regret not doing for my own wedding - photography captures so many wonderful moments, but videography can almost make you feel as though you're reliving them.}

4. Be careful not to blow your fashion budget on your dress.
Maybe you have $1,500 set aside for your look. That doesn't mean you can buy a $1,500 gown! Tack on tax, and if you're not buying off the rack, you could get charged for shipping. You might need alterations, too. Consider your undergarments, shoes, hair accessories and jewelry when budgeting as well.

5. Avoid micromanaging your vendors.
You're choosing talented pros who understand your vision, so let them do their jobs! We know it's tempting to control every detail so you're guaranteed to love the results, but you won't have the time, and you certainly don't have the experience your vendors do. After your initial meetings, trust the pros to get it right. And, you know what? They almost always will. {One more piece of advice to add here, if you constantly feel that your vendors aren't doing their job maybe it's a good idea to change them. The last thing you want to keep telling yourself is, "On the actual wedding day they'll come through. Right?" You don't want to wait that long - if you're having issues with a vendor from the beginning, chances are they'll continue and you don't want to have to deal with a major issue the week of, or even worse, the day of your wedding. Always trust your instincts.}

6. Think hard before you pick your attendants.
Your bridesmaids should be your closest friends. Period. They can also be your sisters, cousins, aunts and even your mom, but they have to be people you'd trust to be there when you most need them. You don't know new friends well enough yet to be sure they'll support you in tough situations (every bride encounters one at some point), and picking people because a family member demands it or so you and your man will have an even number of attendants are also decisions you'll likely regret. {This is the first thing I told my sister - give your engagement a bit of time to settle in before you even think about choosing your attendants. See how people react when you tell them and really think, "Would this person be there to help me out when I'm in need?" and "Am I going to be friends with this person ten years down the road?" So many people, myself included, end up not even talking to someone that was in their bridal party, to avoid that think long and hard about why you're choosing people. Never worry about hurting feelings, there are so many other duties friends can do if you don't feel they're close enough to stand up with you on your big day.}

7. Please restrain yourself from telling everyone your plans.
It's so hard not to talk about your wedding. Try. The more you share, the more opinions you're going to get about your choices, whether or not you ask for them. Plus, part of wowing your guests is surprising them. If they already know that you're changing into a different dress for dancing or sending guests home with a batch of your grandma's cookies, they won't be quite as impressed on your wedding day. If that's not enough to deter you, talking about your plans means opening yourself up to copycats, who may actually be marrying before you do. The last thing you want is your friend stealing your idea for your surprise grand finale. {I've seen this time and time again. Friends that are engaged during the same time talking about the details of their big day only to have one say, "Well, I was going to do that. . ." and then feelings get hurt. When in doubt, keep your mouth shut :o) Rely on, "We haven't finalized that part of the wedding yet."}

8. Seriously, stop booking your salon appointments last.
We get it: You want as much beauty sleep as possible, and you don't want your 'do to fall out or your makeup to fade before you walk down the aisle. But guess what: Busy stylists will likely get to you late if you're last in the chair. Schedule your appointments in the middle of your attendants'. It's not a big deal for a bridesmaid to switch to a less complicated (read: quick) hairstyle if she's pressed for time. That's not an option for you.

9. Don't even think about speeding through photos.
Speaking of not having enough time, any less than an hour isn't enough for a portrait session; an hour-and-a-half is closer to ideal because you'll look more relaxed in your pictures (and those first few never come out as well as you hope). Squeezing photos into the first half-hour of your cocktail hour will make you anything but at ease. If you refuse to see your groom before the ceremony, take pictures separately beforehand so the only shots left to take after the ceremony include both of you.

10. Avoid "hiring" a friend instead of a pro.
Sure, your pal was the king of the mix CD back in the day, but that doesn't mean he'll make a great wedding DJ. Same goes for your friend who won't leave home without her Flip — this doesn't make her a videographer! Even on a tight budget, you're much better off paying a vendor with experience to take care of the biggies, like the music and the food. Don't you want your friends to enjoy your wedding instead of having to work through it, anyway? {Amen! Every professional has to start somewhere, but your big day isn't the place. You hire a professional not only for their talent, but for their knowledge and that just isn't something a vendor comes with a lot of when they're starting out.}

I'm Amanda Cursaro and I've Just Found {pause} the Perfect Wedding Song

You know those Bill Curtis "I've Just Found {pause} the Internet" AT&T commercials (this links to my favorite one!)? Well, the hubby and I always say that (we're quite the quoters of all things TV, movie, song, etc. in this household) whenever we've found pretty much anything. And I mean, anything. Like, "I'm Amanda Cursaro and I've Just Found {pause} the butter." Yes, we are losers, but at least we entertain one another, right?

Well, it's the perfect phrase for what I've just found - the perfect wedding song! Everyone knows and loves Eric Clapton, but "Pretty Girl" off of 1983's Money and Cigarettes is FABULOUS beyond FABULOUS!! Go ahead and give it a listen - it's the most perfect First Dance song. Absolutely beautiful. . .

Never in a million years could I have done this, but I would absolutely love to see something like it in person :)
