Lovebird Productions | Guest Wish List

I love the little bit of Southern Charm today's lovely lady brings to my life.  The oh-so-sweet Katie of Lovebird Productions (this woman is not only an awesome videographer, but she runs a great blog, people - you must check it out!) is up today with some serious greatness of a wish list!!  Let's wish her a happy early 25th birthday and pretend that doesn't make me feel old even one teeny bit ;o)  Thanks so much for sharing, Katie!!

Hey y'all! Thanks for letting me share my current wish list with you today. Who doesn't like daydreaming about our favorite trends?

In a little under two months I will be celebrating my 25th birthday. For those of you who don't know me, birthdays are celebrated like national holidays complete with champagne, dancing and a new make me feel so pretty dress. Hopefully this year I get to celebrate with a few cupcakes, my loved ones and maybe a thing or two on this wish list.

1. I love this blue chair. Ever since I started blogging a year ago I have been searching and bottom testing the perfect chair. I haven't found "the one" but I think this blue number could be a top ranker.

2. This lip tint is amazing y'all! I recently got it in my May birchbox and I am addicted. I apply mutliple times a day.

3. I love a good pair of wedges. Target never fails me.

4. I have been secretly wanting to splurge on this custom clutch. I am a big fan of Oatmeal and Lace.

This has been such a fun post. I hope my husband reads this! ;) Thanks again for letting me share and happy, happy Friday!

Our Home, Re-invasion | Day Two - Master Bedroom, Guest Bedroom + Upstairs Bath

Yesterday, I gave you a taste of what is going on inside the closets of our master bedroom - today, I'll show you the rest of the room, as well as our guest room and upstairs bath.

If you recall, this is what our master bedroom looked like when we bought the house - seriously disgusting.

This is what it looks like today - not a massive change from this, but we have upgraded to a larger bed and added the gorgeous rust colored coverlet and shams.

Next up for the bed/surrounding areas:  getting a new bench (I'm envisioning something in a mustard Ikat fabric, sort of like this), new side tables and lamps. . . to match theses shades I just bought :o)

Here is the beautiful, life changing armoire and dresser (plus Morris, lol!) I recently bought from Ikea.  I'm in love with the soft brown-grey color - combined with the rust, mustard and chocolate (am I hungry?!?) tones in our room it gives off a rich Tuscan feeling.

I also freed up some much needed closet space by hanging my bulky robes and sweater jackets on this pretty bird hook from Hobby Lobby.

And now for the guest bedroom - making it's debut here on baci's blog. . . and guess what?  We still don't have the furniture painted and in the room - we suck :o(  We do, however, have a pretty new Ikea Duvet and Pillowcase Set coupled with a few pretty pillows and a handmade blanket we received as wedding presents.

We also framed the gorgeous vintage handkerchiefs my grandmother gave me. . .

. . . and hung up pretty hooks for guests to hang their towels.  So while we don't have actual furniture in the guest bedroom yet, it isn't all bad ;o)

Another first timer on the blog - our upstairs bathroom!  This room will be getting a much-needed "refreshing" this winter with a new coat of paint and tile in the shower. . . but it certainly works for now.  We used the soft ivory curtain and capiz shell hooks from our last house and updated all of the cabinet hardware with these gorgeous salmon-colored knobs that I mentioned once before.

I also hung the beautiful paintings I bought from a cute little shop while I was working in downtown Charlotte. . .

. . . and we finally covered the hole where a medicine cabinet once was (seriously, who takes a medicine cabinet with them when they move??) with a perfect (and cheap!) mirror from Target.  Those sconces (I totally wrote scones the first time, lol!) will also be tossed out a window when we re-do the bathroom later this year.

I've also bragged about my brown toile curtains once, but here they are again ;o)

Our Home, Re-invasion | Day One - Reorganization

Three short years ago, we moved into our current home - it was quite the arduous process, but in the end it was all worth it and we are completely in love with it.  This is what it looked like before we moved in:

The poor thing had been empty for an entire year, needless to say we had a lot of work ahead of us :o)  This is what the lovely lady looks like today (like, literally today - I just ran outside and took a picture!):

We ripped out the bushes because they were a) too close to the house and b) they were causing our basement to get wet; we also got new windows and a new, darker roof, plus painted our door red.  Up this summer:  new siding and landscaping (I'm sure our neighborhood would appreciate that over the weeded barrenness that we have now).

We've also done a bunch of things inside so I thought I'd have a little Home Re-invasion this week on the blog.  If you remember, I gave you a taste of Before and After of our house here, here and here.  Today we'll start with the reorganization that's been going on these past few weeks in our bedroom and basement in preparation for the garage sale we had last week!  Then we'll move on throughout the rest of the house, ending with the unveiling of baci's studio :o)

Up until about a month ago, my clothes were in both our bedroom and the guest bedroom - the clothes I wore most frequently resided in our bedroom, my dresses and jackets lived in the other room.  This didn't make getting ready when we had guests that convenient. . . and it typically required a lot of me running around in my underwear trying to figure out what I wanted to wear.  This needed to end, and if we ever want to turn that guest bedroom into a nursery we really should have space to put a baby's things.

The main problem was lack of space - our house was built in the '50's and amazingly it does have a lot of closets, unfortunately, those closets aren't very useful because they are long and narrow.  Ilario even has his very own closet (in the hallway - God bless him!) and I still didn't have the room for all of my clothes (which I love dearly, but I swear I really am good at purging so I don't have that many).  I also realized that our dressers were tiny, like meant for a child tiny.  So when Jami and I were in Pittsburgh, I bought a beautiful new adult-size dresser and armoire.  Bam, just like that I was able to combine my two closets and everything resides in my room now (Ilario is still banned to the hallway, but I promise his closet is nice - he can walk in it)!!

Moving everything into one room has been amazing - I sorted through everything and was finally able to organize my clothes by color.  Nerdy, I know, but do it - it's truly life-changing!!  When shopping I now know what I have and in what color, so I don't purchase things already in my closet :o)  This is what my closet looks like now - a dream would be to have all the same hangers, but that would be a lot of hangers to replace!  Someday. . .

Confession:  I did move all my winter clothes (like sweater dresses and wool pants/jackets) back into the guest bedroom closet, but I promise once the basement is up and running I'll store them down there.

Using a tip from my sister-in-law I bought a pretty two-sided shoe organizer and I now store my belts and scarves it in - seriously, another life-changing moment :o)

All of our sweaters and pajamas (yes, even Ilario's) now live on the shelves in the armoire.  I haven't been able to utilize this to it's maximum ability because it's been too hot, but I know it's going to be awesome come winter-time.

And in the hanging portion of the armoire, I now have all of my sleeveless tops and jackets (organized by color again!) at the top and my pants and skirts on the bottom.  So lovely :o)

I even bought drawer organizers for the new dresser - no more sorting trying to figure out what socks are black.  A serious win in my book!

Taking my bedroom organization overhaul one step further, I used a pretty silver tray I found in my uncle's stash of goods on its way to the flea market to hold my hair tools.  I placed a small wash cloth under it to protect the dresser from the heat.

I also bought a fun silver tray from TJ Maxx to hold all of my makeup - once again life-changing!  I now know what I have and it's easy to get to - before I was storing it all in a grungy makeup bag.

I have all my necklaces strung up in the closet so I never have to waste time untangling them and all my other jewelry stays nice and neat in pretty boxes on top of the dresser.

Next up:  the basement!  It's currently horrendous.  We went through EVERYTHING (like a whole crap-ton of stuff ranging from baci goodness to holiday décor) before the garage sale and now it all needs placed into labeled clear tubs.  Now that will be heavenly once it's done :o)

Striped and Scented Holiday Home Decor

I'm always on the lookout for fun and unique ways to decorate, especially for the holidays.  That coupled with my Pinterest addiction was the inspiration for this post :o)  All of theses holiday decorating ideas use either candy canes or another form of red and white striped peppermint - the combination of affordability and amazing scents make these ideas incredible!!

Two Wedding Belles - Guest Wish List

I'm very happy to bring back a feature we did a few times last year that I LOVED - Guest Wish Lists!!  This week and next we have amazing ladies from even more amazing companies with, you'll never believe it. . . AMAZING Wish Lists ;o)

First up, the ever kind and sweet Jessica Kapadia of Two Wedding Belles - an Event Coordination Company in the Philadelphia/DC area!  Thank you so much, Jessica, for providing such cute things that we'll want to add to our own Wish Lists!

How excited was I when Amanda suggested I contribute to her Guest Wish List series for all you baci's blog readers out there? Super excited! I always seem to have my eye on a few items at any given time, so it was a blast to assemble them all in one place and spread the word on their loveliness.

1. What don't I love about this Kelly Green Girl bag from Alesya? It's leathery softness looks downright pillow worthy, it's just the right shade of green, and, oh yeah, it's also big enough to tote around my laptop. Is that what we call the bag trifecta? I think maybe it is.

2. This mini binder from Russel + Hazel just simlpy needs to find it's way into my bag (maybe even the Alesya bag mentioned above?). It's small enough to take with me everywhere and even has a dry-erase inside the cover. Genius! As far as picking a color from the linen and patent cover options available. . . now that's a task I don't think I'm quite ready for. But I'll get there someday.

3. Confession: I don't like my dining table. It's the one piece of furniture that remains from our condo's previous owner, and it just doesn't "go" with anything else in our de-luxe apartment in the sky. So of course I'm practically drooling over the Terra Dining Table from West Elm. I love the clean but substantial lines and the dark color. I guess I'd also love enough room to actually fit this table in our living space, but that'll just have to wait for another Wish List. . . !

4. It'll soon be time to start looking ahead to the new year out in front of us, right? What better way to flip through the months of 2012 than doing so with the uber-stylish letterpress calendar from Linda & Harriett? A big time bonus comes with this one, too: each unique design can also be used as a postcard once I say sayonara to that particular month. I have a spot on my desk that is already reserved for this baby.

Once again - a huge thank you to Jessica for her great post. . . I want, well, everything on your list ;o)  Especially that calendar - love, love, love the idea of the old months being recycled as postcards!

baci's baking - Layered Mexican Dip

This past weekend at friends, Mike and Lisa's cookout I brought along an appetizer I created back when we lived in Charlotte - Layered Mexican Dip! I hadn't made the recipe in a while, but it was just as tasty as I remembered and I came home with an empty dish which is always a good sign :o) Enjoy!!

Layered Mexican Dip

1 (16 oz.) can black beans
2 T. taco seasoning (I always use my homemade recipe!)
1 garlic clove, pressed
1 cup sour cream
1 cup pre-made guacamole (I generally use one that's nice and garlicy!!)
1 (8 oz.) package shredded colby jack cheese
3 large plum tomatoes, diced

1) In a small bowl, combine black beans, taco seasoning, garlic and sour cream.
2) Spread mixture evenly over bottom of 9x13-inch baking dish.
3) Spread guacamole over sour cream.
4) Sprinkle cheese evenly over guacamole and top with tomatoes.
5) Serve with tortilla chips. (Tostitos® Artisan Recipes® Roasted Garlic and Black Bean Tortilla Chips are our new favorite - they are DELICIOUS!!)

Happy Memorial Day!!

We hope you did (or still are!!) enjoying your three-day weekend!! I love this wedding day theme simply because of the colors - red, white, and blue show such warmth and comfort, alongside the important fact of being patriotic.

We're so thankful to all of those who serve for our freedom - Happy Memorial Day and enjoy the inspiration board!

baci's baking - A Royal Wedding Feast

Well, actually a Royal Wedding Viewing Party Feast, but who's comparing ;o)

Friday's Party was a success so I thought I'd share with you all the tasty treats I made (with the help of my lovely husband and a few great friends - THANK YOU!), complete with a recipe that I would never in a million years make. More on that later.

First off, the favors for all the guests in attendance were. . . a surprise - lol! I will tell you that they were made with my Grandma Sholl's Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies! I also made a past baci's baking recipe - Smoked Salmon Tea Sandwiches, an all-time favorite of mine.

For dessert, I baked Sticky Fingers Bakeries Original Recipe Scones - they are so delicious - complete with Strawberry-Rhubarb Jam and Clotted Cream (it's waaay tastier than it sounds, I swear!). I also made a tweaked version of Ms. Martha's Almond Petit Fours combined with the Food Network's Fondant Glaze to create British Fondant Fancies (recipe to follow).

To top off the savory portion of the party, I served various cheeses (I really recommend serving Parmigiano Reggiano on it's own instead of just shredded on top of things - everyone fell in love!), cured meats and the scrumptious Grands! Mini Biscuits. I also had my lovely husband make and assemble the "Best Cucumber Sandwiches" (recipe to follow) - which is a HUGE deal because I 100% despise cucumbers and anything that has to do with cucumbers. The fact that I a) bought a cucumber and b) let the smell of cut cucumbers into my kitchen just goes to show how much I love my clients, local vendors, friends and family. They must have been good because there wasn't a single one left - I will never know.

Now for the recipes - ENJOY!!

Almond Petit Fours (or Fondant Fancies if you're going British)
Original Recipes from Martha Stewart and Food Network

6 T. unsalted butter, softened, plus more for baking sheet
1 1/4 cups flour (not self-rising), plus more for baking sheet
3/4 t. baking powder
1/4 t. baking soda
1/4 t. salt
1 1/4 cup sugar, separated
1/2 t. almond extract
4 large eggs, separated (I always forget this, that's why I'm bolding it - lol!)
1/2 t. pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup preserves (Any kind will do, I used raspberry this time around.)

For the Fondant:
2/3 cup corn syrup
2/3 cup hot water
7 cups powdered sugar
Food coloring

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 12-by-17- inch rimmed baking sheet and line with parchment paper. Butter (or spray) parchment and dust with flour, tapping out excess; set aside.
2) Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a large bowl; set aside.
3) Put 1 cup sugar and the almond extract into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-low speed until mixture resembles coarse meal, about 2 minutes.
4) Raise speed to medium-high. Add butter; mix until pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
5) Mix in egg yolks and vanilla.
6) Add flour mixture in 2 batches, alternating with the milk. Transfer to a large bowl; set aside.
7) Put egg whites into the clean bowl of an electric mixer fitted with whisk attachment; beat on medium-high speed until foamy. Gradually add remaining 1/4 cup sugar, beating until soft peaks form.
8) Fold one-third of egg-white mixture into batter with a rubber spatula. Gently fold in remaining egg-white mixture.
9) Spread evenly into prepared sheet. Bake until a cake tester inserted into center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes.
10)Transfer sheet to wire rack; let cool completely. Unmold; remove parchment.
11) Cut cake in half crosswise.
12) Spread one half with preserves; top with remaining half. Refrigerate 1 hour.
13) Trim cake, and cut into 1 1/2-inch squares. Transfer to a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet.
14) To make the fondant: Whisk the corn syrup into the hot water until dissolved, then whisk in the powdered sugar until smooth. If desired, divide into smaller bowls and color with food coloring, adding color until you achieve the proper shade.
15) Pour fondant over each petit four, spreading over top and sides to coat completely. Reuse glaze, straining to remove any solids, if needed.
16) Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes. Garnish with decorations, if desired.

Best Cucumber Sandwiches

1 medium cucumber
1/2 cp. cider vinegar
1 cup water
8 oz. package reduced fat cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 t. garlic powder
1/4 t. onion salt
dash Worcestershire
1 loaf sliced, firm-textured bread
garnish-thinly sliced pimento-stuffed green olives or paprika (Optional)

1) Score cucumber lengthwise with fork (for looks) and slice thin.
2) In medium bowl, combine vinegar and water, add cucumber slices; let stand at room temp. at least 30 min.
3) Drain WELL.
4) Meanwhile, combine cream cheese, mayo, garlic powder, onion salt and Worcestershire.
5) Cut bread slices into rounds, or any shape you want, with a cookie cutter (We just used the cocktail size loaves that are already cut into small pretty squares - so much quicker!) and spread with cream cheese mixture. Top each with a slice of cucumber.
6) Shortly before serving top with olive slice or paprika, or both.

Makes about 48 round tea sandwiches.

Join baci's book club!!

Earlier in the week during my most recent baci's baking post, I mentioned book club and promised I would delve into it deeper later in the week, well here I am, about to delve in ;o)
When Ilario and I moved back to Ohio in the Fall of 2008, I joined my sister-in-law, Cathy, at her current book club. Shortly afterwards a few of us branched off and started our own book club which I began organizing and hosting at my home on a monthly basis (well actually my in-laws house because I didn't have a home at the time!). That was November of 2008 and ten members. Fast forward to April of 2011 with thirty members and a Waiting List!! What I will call baci's book club for simplicity's sake, has come a long way - there are only a few of us original members left, but collectively we have compiled such a great group of women that I am proud to be in cahoots with :o)

Now that you have a little background on baci's book club, I'll fill you in on why I'm telling you all of this, lol! Each month after baci's book club meets, I'll write a little recap of the meeting, along with our next month's book choice and meeting date (everyone works harder with a deadline, right?). Then you, baci's book club eMembers, can comment on the post with your thoughts on the month's read and start reading the next month's book choice with us!

We're all in book club to find out what other people are interested in reading or recommend reading (and to socialize, of course!), so now you can do the same with us from the comfort of your own home, wherever you are!! There's also a bonus - each month we rotate who brings an appetizer, dessert or booze so the Tuesday after each meeting I'll share one of our favorite recipes from the night! Everyone wins when food is involved ;o)

So how do I become a baci's book club eMember, you ask. . . just fill out the form at the bottom of the post AND THEN I'll send you a baci bookmark in the mail, it's as simple as that! Be sure to tell your friends, because the more members we have the greater book club becomes!!

To get you going, here is what we're reading for the month of May - Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (we LOVE reading a book then watching the movie!).

And to give you a nice jump start on your "Want to Read List", here are books we have read in the past:

Kane & Abel by Jeffrey Archer
Mennonite in a Little Black Dress: A Memoir of Going Home by Rhoda Janzen {The club as a whole wasn't a huge fan of this one.}
Cain and Abel by Michelle Perry {A happy accidental read :o)}
The Kids Are All Right by Diana and Liz Welch
Little Bee by Chris Cleave
Firefly Lane and Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah {We love Kristin Hannah!}
The Wife's Tale by Lori Lansens
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert {This is one of my favorites, but the club wasn't such a fan. . .}
The Four Seasons by Mary Alice Monroe
The Friday Night Knitting Club and Knit Two by Kate Jacobs
Best Friends by Martha Moody
The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows {A wonderful read!}
Hissy Fit and Blue Christmas by Mary Kay Andrews {We really love Mary Kay Andrews and can't wait for Summer Rental to be released in June!}
The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb {I honestly couldn't bring myself to finish this one :o(}
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein {Great, great book!}
Life of Pi by Yann Martel {The club didn't like this one too much either, but it's definitely an interesting/perplexing one!}
Self Storage: A Novel by Gayle Brandeis
Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
Missing Mom by Joyce Carol Oates

So what are you favorites? Any of the ones we have read peak your interest? What do you recommend we read next?

I hope this provides you all great choices of books to read and a wonderful chance for online conversation :o) I look forward to reading with you!! Thanks!

This meal is my husband's absolute favorite - any time I ask him what he'd like for dinner he screams "FLANK STEAK WITH SALSA VERDE!!!". I must give proper thanks to our family friend, Bill, for this tasty recipe though since he's the one that gave it to us :o)

Flank Steak with Salsa Verde

2 cup loosely packed fresh parsley
3 scallions, coarsely chopped
2 T. capers, drained
Zest and juice of ½ lemon
2 anchovy fillets
2 cloves garlic, smashed
½ t. dijon mustard
⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the grill
Kosher salt
1 flank steak (about 1½ pounds)
Freshly ground pepper
2 or 3 medium tomatoes

1) Make the salsa verde: Pulse the parsley, scallions, capers, lemon zest and juice, anchovies, garlic, mustard and olive oil in a food processor until slightly chunky. Pour into a bowl and season with salt.
2) Preheat a grill to high or place a grill pan over high heat.
3) Pierce the steak all over with a fork and season with salt and pepper.
4) Oil the grill or pan; grill the steak, 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare, turning once. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes.
5) Slice the tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Thinly slice the steak against the grain. Serve with the tomatoes and salsa verde.

My Kohl's Bathroom - My Current Wishlist

Eric has two bathrooms and neither one of them is huge, so when looking for items I tried to minimize what I was looking at because of the space. I think I did a wonderful job picking out four items we could use but do not take up tons of space.

1) Creative Bath® 4-Shelf Glass Tower, $89.99 - This would be something nice for when we have visitors, to sit out things for them that they can use. 2) Chaps Home Bath Towels (Brown), $13.99 - Who doesn't need more bath towels :-) 3) Avanti Linens Cobblestone Circle Shower Curtain (Green Mocha), $39.99 - I like this shower curtain because it is brown with a hint of green, which happens to be the accent color in the bathroom - perfect! 4) Creative Bath® 3-pc. Basket Set (Walnut), $29.99 - I could always use some storage for under the cupboards, in the cabinets, or beside the vanity to keep organized

baci's baking - Polish Paczki

In honor of Fat Tuesday {Hooray!} I thought I'd post a recipe for the yummy Polish Paczki! Enjoy!!

Polish Pre-Lenten Paczki
Original Recipe from Cooks.com

STEP 1 - Making the sponge:
1 cup lukewarm milk
1 cup sifted flour
2 packages dry yeast
1 T. sugar
2 T. warm water

1) Dissolve the yeast in warm water and add sugar.
2) Add the yeast mixture to the milk and flour. Cover. Let rise until double in bulk.

STEP 2 - Making the dough:
5 eggs
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 t. vanilla
1/4 lb. soft butter
1 t. rum extract
1 t. orange rind
1 1/2 T. salt
6 cup flour, sifted (or just enough to make a soft dough)

1) Take 5 eggs and add confectioners' sugar. Beat well until lemon colored.
2) Combine with the sponge and mix well.
3) Add 1 teaspoon vanilla, rum and orange rind. Then add salt and butter and mix well.
4) Add sifted flour gradually to the above mixture and knead dough until it comes away from your hand. Cover, set aside in warm place and let rise until double.
5) Flour a board lightly. Divide the dough into 3 parts. Pat dough until 1/2 inch thick. Cut doughnuts with cutter or inverted glass. Let rise until double.

STEP 3 - Frying the paczki:
1) Heat the oil to 350°F, drop doughnuts into hot oil and fry on one side until golden and puffy, then turn on the other and continue to fry until other side is golden.
2) Remove and place on paper towels to drain. Roll lightly in granulated sugar or glaze with icing.

Makes 2 dozen.

Notes: Paczki can be frozen up to 3 months. To serve, place in brown paper bag, sprinkle with water and place in warm oven until the doughnuts are hot - about 20 minutes.
The paczki can be filled with jelly; a pastry tube is used after the doughnuts are fried.
